Project status: Completed 2019

The Whittle School & Studios is a global school network for students from 3 to 18 years old, designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop. We provided lighting design services alongside our Arup’s multidisciplinary team, developing the lighting global standards to be implemented across their future campuses. Our lighting scope includes the exteriors and interior lighting design.

The overall design is open, light and transparent, with abundant natural light and visual links between the spaces. When night falls, the building glows from within like a lantern in its neighborhood, from the subtle illumination on the interior vertical walls.

Our daylighting and electric lighting design creates a high level of visual comfort for a pleasant learning environment and high flexibility to cater to the wide student age range and varied furniture configuration for related activities.

Through close coordination with the design team, we achieved a modern, highly functional educational facilitity that is at the same time contextually sensitive and visually charming.

Client: Macquarie University

Project status: Open in 2017

The vision of the on-campus Incubator at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, is to serve the world through innovation. The building for this innovation centre needed to reflect the values of the Incubator: sustainability, innovation, speed and flexibility.

Arup’s engineers were brought in to work with a variety of partners and deliver solutions around sustainability and timber design, lighting, acoustics and more.

With a goal to produce diffused, indirect lighting, the team integrated the detail of the lighting into the timber beams. This allowed for a clean, minimalist look, and a ceiling free of evident lighting services.

We are a global collective dedicated to sustainable development. We use technology, imagination and rigour to shape a better world.
